F.M.W:Activity One

Activity 1 - Reading Comprehension
We have been reading the book Frog Whistle Mine by Des Hunt, a New Zealand author. Here is some of my thinking so far about what I have read…
Literal
  1. Where the owners of Tree Frog Lodge expecting Christine to have a son? How could you tell?
  2. What season is it in the book? How can you tell?
  3. Fred put up the sign in front of the mine entrance. What were his reasons?

Infer
  1. Why do you think Tony was excited to be living in the caravan?
  2. How do you know that he was a little worried about living in the caravan?
  3. What does Tony think about Duggan? Why?

Vocab
  1. In the book it says, “...the thought of ghosts lurking in that ugly, abandoned landscape.” What does lurking mean here?
  2. In the book it says, “Whenever their future looked bleak, Christine would say, ‘There’s always light at the end of the tunnel.’” What does bleak mean here?
  3. In the book it says, “Tony looked at the table where the pieces of the telephone lay exposed beneath a heat lamp.” What does exposed mean here?

Re-organise
  1. Tony thought that someone or something had damaged the caravan because on purpose…? What clues were written in the book?
  2. What was wrong with the caravan when Tony returned to it after talking to Fred?
  3. What was the name of Fred’s mine? Why was it named that?

Evaluation
  1. Do you think that Tree Frog Lodge was a popular place for tourists? How do you know? What are the clues?
  2. Why do you think Fred decided to share the mine with Tony, Rose, Christine and Nick?

Reaction
  1. What do you think the author wants you to think about Duggan?
